Pain Pathway Explanation

How do we help your pain?

How does our technique work? What’s the secret?

You’ve asked us this question thousands of times, and actually it’s very difficult to explain everything while you’re in clinic with us!

What we do is so unique that you’ve most likely not experienced anything similar to it before.

There’s no bone cracking, needle sticking, knot kneading…

Sometimes it seems like we’re not doing much at all!

So let’s explain what we do.

To understand this, we need to talk about your inner workings, and how you’re getting pain.

Pain is an output, from your brain. It’s a perception, like your vision, taste, sense of smell, touch.

Your brain has to receive information from the body, before deciding whether to give you pain.

Exactly the way you have to put something in your mouth before you taste something.

When you put something sweet in your mouth, the sugar binds onto these little receptors on your tongue, specifically, your taste buds.

The taste buds then send a signal to your brain, telling your brain that sugar is in your mouth. Then your brain process that information and gives you the sensation of sweetness.

Fairly straight forward and simple! Sugar in mouth = you taste sweetness. Sugar is the input, brain is the processing centre, sweetness is the output.

Input -> Process -> Output

Pain works in similar ways.

When we cut ourselves, the receptors on your skin gets activated (input), and sends a signal to your brain.

Your brain processes this information, and produce the sensation of pain (output, ouch-put?).

Again, Input -> Process -> Output.

Once the healing is done, the receptors stop sending these signals, and your brain stops giving you the painful sensation.

Okay, so far so good.

BUT… there’s always a but.

Sometimes, these receptors in your body get ‘stuck’, meaning they keep sending these signals to your brain even in the absence of damage.

We currently don’t have enough researches to understand WHY these receptors get stuck, whether it’s actually a ‘mistake’ or it serves a genuine purpose.

But what we understand is that in chronic pain (or pain that surpasses natural healing time), these receptors become extremely sensitised, so much so that, in some cases, just brushing the skin is painful.

Alright you with me so far? If not please read the above again, or pop us a question.

Now this is what we investigate and sort out when we work with your body.

We first find the location of the receptors that are sending these wrong signals, or sensitised.

Often, but not always, they are near the painful area.

Then we identify the type of receptors that are misbehaving. Much like your tongue has different taste buds for different taste, your body has different receptors for different sensation, eg. pressure vs stretch.

Once we have these two information, Location & Type, we then work to de-sensitise these receptors.

This can be a long process, finding the location and type takes time, but most of the work is done on de-sensitising, which can be very complex.

It takes more time, but the reward is greater – once we have successfully de-sensitised these receptors, the results are long-lived, often permanent.

We are not helping you compensate for the problem better, we are getting rid of your problem altogether!

So there you have it, the simple explanation of what we do for you.

Remember, it takes time to do something perfectly, there is no quick fix. Any quick relief is often just a better compensation for your problem.

We’re perfectionists. So have that in mind when you embark on your journey with us.
